Survivors and early detection are the platforms for TABI's breast cancer campaigns. Since 2003, TABI and its customers have donated over $200,000 to breast cancer research through various affiliations. Thank you for your support.
At TABI, we take pride in being a company of women serving women. Our ongoing contributions to breast cancer research allow us to also celebrate that we are a company of women helping women.
THE PINK DRAGON™ COLLECTION
TABI’s PINK DRAGON™ icon was developed as our own unique sign of hope and as a symbol what is required to put an end to breast cancer. It represents giving women a chance to live a full life free from breast cancer. The idea for PINK DRAGON™ is inspired by Canada’s national dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors whose mission is to spread the message of hope to those living with breast cancer.
WHY A PINK DRAGON?
Dragons are mythical legendary creatures that represent the primal forces of nature and the universe. They are associated with wisdom and longevity, and are known to possess some form of magic. Chinese dragons, specifically, are benevolent. Dragons represent power and strength.
PROUD SPONSOR OF CANADIANS ABREAST NATIONAL DRAGON BOAT TEAM
Canadians Abreast is a dragon boat team of 120 women across Canada who are all breast cancer survivors. This is the only national team in Canada. Their mission is to spread the message of hope to those living with breast cancer.
What is the connection between breast cancer and dragon boating?
Dr. Don McKenzie, a Canadian sports medicine physician, launched Abreast In A Boat in 1996 to test the myth that repetitive upper-body exercise in women treated for breast cancer discourages lymphedema.
Lymphedema is abnormal swelling of the tissues. Women who have been treated for breast cancer may be at risk for lymphedema, or arm swelling. Most women who have had breast cancer will not develop this side effect, but many will. Once lymphedema has started, it cannot be cured, but early and careful management can reduce symptoms and keep the condition from getting worse.
Dr. McKenzie believed that by following a special exercise and training program, women could avoid this. Women who followed this training program were carefully monitored and Dr McKenzie’s theory was proven correct. No new cases of lymphedema occurred and none of the existing cases became worse.
Since 1996, dragon boat racing has become a predominant sport amongst women breast cancer survivors worldwide. From a medical study involving one boat of 25 women in 1996, the organization has now grown to include 53 breast cancer teams in Canada and 112 worldwide.
THE PINK DRAGON™ INITIATIVE
TABI and the Canadians Abreast Dragonboat Team have joined efforts to raise funds to purchase early detection diagnostic equipment for Canadian communities in need. The first purchase of this vital equipment was for a community in Nunavut in 2008. The fundraising goal for the first initiative was $60,000. The cheque from our combined efforts was presented to the Qikiqtani Hospital on April 12th, 2008 by the Canadians Abreast Dragonboat team.
TABI'S new goal is to raise $200,000 through sales from our PINK DRAGON™ collection to purchase a diagnostic machine for Dartmouth General Hospital. This machine will detect breast cancer and ovarian cancer in women.
How Funds are Raised:
Year-round, PINK DRAGON™ products are available in TABI stores and online. 10% of each sale of a PINK DRAGON™ item, will be donated to Canadian communities in desperate need of diagnostic equipment for early detection of breast cancer.
